There's something about December that makes people feel like they're running out of time.

Time to finish things. Make decisions. Get organized. Figure out what next year is going to look like.

And somewhere in the middle of holiday shopping, school concerts, and trying to remember which child needs to bring what to school tomorrow, we're apparently also supposed to be reflecting on our accomplishments and setting ambitious goals for the coming year.

It's a lot.

And I think sometimes we forget that we're allowed to just... not.

## Not everything needs a decision right now

I see this in real estate, too.

People wondering whether they should buy before the end of the year. Whether they should hurry up and list their house. Whether they're missing an opportunity by waiting until spring.

And sometimes there are good reasons to make a move in December.

But sometimes there aren't.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is gather information, understand your options, and give yourself a little room to think.

A house is a pretty significant purchase. Selling one is a pretty significant decision, too.

Neither needs to happen simply because the calendar is about to change.

## I've been thinking a lot about slowing down

This year, I made a conscious effort to pay attention to what I was letting into my life.

More camping with the kids. More hiking through the woods. Kayaking on local waterways. Time in the garden.

I started unplugging after 8 p.m. and somehow managed to read more books than I have in years.

And none of those things were particularly productive.

Which, I think, was the point.

I wasn't trying to optimize my time or turn every quiet moment into an opportunity for personal growth.

I just wanted to be there.

Outside. With my family. In the garden. Reading a book without feeling like I should be doing something else.

And I noticed something.

The less noise I let in, the easier it became to hear myself think.

## There's something to be said for a little space

I don't think we make our best decisions when we're constantly reacting to everything around us.

Not about houses. Not about work. Not about much of anything, really.

Sometimes you need more information.

And sometimes you just need a little quiet.

The world will happily provide an endless list of things you should be doing, buying, improving, or worrying about.

You don't actually have to participate in all of it.

So if December finds you feeling a little more reflective than ambitious, I think that's perfectly fine.

You don't have to buy a house before January.

You don't have to sell one.

You don't have to have next year mapped out before this one is finished.

Maybe you just need to enjoy the lights, read another chapter, take a walk in the woods, and let a few things wait.

They'll still be there.

## Here's to a little less noise

Whatever this season looks like for you, I hope there's some room in it for the things that make you feel like yourself.

The people you love. A good book. A quiet morning. A walk outside.

And maybe a little less pressure to turn every moment into something useful.

The new year will come whether we've figured everything out or not.

We might as well enjoy the one we're in.
