# The Best Homes Leave Room for Possibility

by [Priscilla Weston](https://priscillaweston.com/blog/author/priscilla-weston) | Aug 7, 2026

One of my favorite things to look for in real estate isn't necessarily the biggest bargain, the prettiest kitchen, or the most impressive square footage.

It's flexibility.

I love a property that makes sense for someone's life today but also leaves room for whatever comes next.

Because if there's one thing we can count on, it's that life rarely goes exactly according to plan.

## A Little House With a Lot of Possibilities

I recently featured a property at [728 Bridgton Road in Sebago, Maine](https://www.flexmls.com/share/EQG7G/728-Bridgton-Road-Sebago-ME-04029) as one of my favorite buys.

And what caught my attention wasn't any one particular feature.

It was all the different ways someone could use it over the years.

Imagine buying a home that could be:

- Your primary residence today.
- A weekend escape a few years from now.
- Your retirement home down the road.
- A vacation rental, subject to local regulations.
- An investment property if life takes you somewhere else.

That's a lot of potential packed into one property.

## The Value Isn't Always in What's Finished

This particular home sits on more than five private acres near Sebago Lake.

Close enough to enjoy boating, swimming, hiking, and everything the Lakes Region has to offer, without the waterfront price tag.

But what really interested me were some of the less obvious details.

The home has a heated walkout basement and a three-bedroom septic design. Depending on the layout, permitting, and other requirements, those features could give a future owner options for additional finished living space.

That's the kind of hidden value I love finding.

**You're buying today's home while leaving room for tomorrow's possibilities.**

And then there are the practical things: newer construction, a metal roof, heat pump, attached garage, wraparound deck, and five acres of land.

Not particularly flashy. But a combination of features that could be difficult or expensive to recreate.

## Buy for the Life You Have. Think About the Life You Might Have.

Of course, not every house needs to serve five different purposes.

Sometimes the right home is simply the one that works beautifully for the next chapter of your life.

But when I'm evaluating a property, I like to look beyond the listing photos and ask a few more questions.

Could the layout accommodate changing needs? Is there space to expand? Could the property work as a rental someday? Are there features that would be difficult to add later?

And just as importantly, are those possibilities realistic given the property's condition, zoning, and cost?

Potential is wonderful. But it needs to make financial sense, too.

That's why I love properties like this one in Sebago.

Not because I know exactly what the next owner should do with it.

But because they might have quite a few good options.

**Real estate isn't just about what a home is today. Sometimes the real value is in what it could become.**
